ESET Online Scanner is a great free tool for detecting threats without installing antivirus software. It uses the same scanning technology and signatures as ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus. However, it is accessible via using a web browser. It can scan a vast variety of areas, such as autostart regions, boot sectors and the registry. It can also attempt to fix issues caused by restarts and re-scan files which were previously considered to be infected. It does not, however provide real-time protection.
The interface is simple and easy to use. The main window displays a list with names and descriptions of the detected threats. The user can choose to either delete or quarantine the threat and create a custom scanning profile to scan specific files and folders. The program can be used offline, but you must have an internet connection to download the necessary signatures and for completing the initial update.
The program can detect various types of malware, including viruses, Trojans or spyware, as well as adware and potentially unwanted software. It can also remove rootkits which aren’t always eliminated by other scanners. It may take a while to complete a complete scan, and the software is heavy on the CPU. It also does not scan password-protected or encrypted files, and it does not always identify sophisticated zero-day malware. It is best used as a second-opinion scan alongside other antivirus programs. The first scan is free however subsequent scans and fixes to problems require payment.
